Creep: The Ukraine Crisis as a Potential Response to NATO Expansion

The Cold War wet dream of M1s rolling through East Berlin and into Moskva may not be over. It's just that it may take decades, not months.

The economic carrot for joining NATO is substantial. What government would not want the US Department of Defence underwriting their military?

If the Ukraine had joined NATO, Russia would not only have stood to lose Sebastopol port. NATO troops could be stationed at Shostka 588 km from Moskva, instead of Rezekne, Latvia, 683km from Moskva.

How would the US like it if nuclear-capable units were parked within striking distance of their capital cities? Oh wait, that actually happened, and it almost caused WW3.
