Can an Employer change my Hours without consultation?

Q: I have been working full time for about 2 years, with fixed hours and days off. Just recently, I have been given 14 days notice that my hours are going to change all over the place. This has happened without consultation. My team leader and assistant manager say that they can do this for business reasons. Is there anything I can do?

A: This is potentially a breach of the employment agreement, not to mention, unfair.
  1. Call the Fair Work Ombudsman (FWO) and complain.
  2. Tell your employer that you have spoken to the FWO and offer to negotiate.
  3. If this does not work, ask the FWO for a complaint form.
  4. Submitting the complaint form may result in a FWO inspector being sent out. Depending on their findings, the employer may be fined.
